“Better an hour too soon than a minute too late” – proverb
In olden times this ancient inn
Stood neigh a gallows grim,
And here the victims downed a rum
Afore their bodies swung.
But Tom was not of patient cast
And would not drink “a last”;
“Naw, get it done as soonst may be;
An ‘our means nowt to me”.
They quickly strung him up on high,
‘Twas not a pretty sight,
And left him to the wind and rain
And slowly gathering night.
Too late a messenger raced up;
His horse’s flanks still heaved,
“Hold off! Hold off” he cried aloud,
“The young man’s been reprieved”.
